"Winter Season" by Konstantin
(2006-01-24)

The new anime season is under way, and here are my impressions so far:

Yes
Fate/Stay Night - It's out, and it's good. While I'm not hopping up and down in fits of fanboy glee the way I did a year ago courtesy of Air TV, this is turning out to be a great show, and faithful to what little of the game I have played. The animation is solid, without being particularly flashy, the pacing is steady, having the luxury of 24 episodes to tell the story, and the voice acting is excellent, supporting the character dynamics nicely. Considering that I liked even the much-maligned Tsukihime well enough to buy, I can definitely see F/SN gracing the Wall o' Anime in a year or two.

Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~ - The sub-title says it all. Last year was pretty dry for shoujo ai lovers, but now it looks like the industry has realized the error of its ways and is making up for it by presenting us with an all-female love triangle story. Granted, the apex of that triangle used to be male, but the situation was quickly corrected courtesy of the world's most phallic-looking spaceship. Good animation, cute characters, and did I mention the shoujo ai? In a word, squee!

Maybe
Wings of Rean - The first episode can be briefly described as OMGWTFBBQ! Lots of things happening at a frantic pace with the few bits of explanation only serving to make things more confusing. Apparently this is a sequel OAV series to the 80's mech classic Aura Battler Dunbine, so familiarity with that may make things more comprehensible. For the rest of us, hopefully the frantic action will slow down just long enough for someone to explain what the hell is going on. Either that, or we could see more mechs blow each other to bits, either would be cool. ^^

Magikano - Has all the makings of a run of the mill harem show. The twist in this one seems to be that the female lead is a tad on the evil side (and a witch to boot), but the humor feels stale and generic, and the seiyuu sound like they're trying too hard. Probably going to pass on this one, wake me up if someone pulls a box cutter.

Lost me at the opening
Kagihime Monogatari - Eikyuu Alice Rondo - Animation = meh. Genre = generic harem. Subtitle font = illegible. Verdict = plonk.
