"Laika 34" by Akira
(2006-06-02)

06/03 Sat - I had a good rest. I'll work on the comic strip when I get home from work. It's Saturday, you know...? Sigh...

06/05 Mon - Sorry Friday's strip was late. I was quite busy this weekend. I was on a rush when I drew this page. Sorry the page is extremely rough and messy. I need to change the dialogs too... Sigh...

Monday's strip will be up within 24 hours. The story is getting rather complicating. I hope I can go through Laika's story arc in one piece. I think I'll have difficult time giving reasons/motivations to all characters' actions. Otherwise readers will be left alone and a story becomes cheesy. I'll do my best to avoid that pitfall.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (manga version)

The manga at bottom of the picture is the first official manga of "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" drawn by Gaku Tsugano. Actually... the actual first Haruhi manga was written by Makoto Mizuno (website 18+), but since the author drew H doujinshi of Haruhi (as if it is a side story of Haruhi manga?), the company got really really upset and decided to cancel its publication and neglect its total existance. So Gaku Tsugano's manga is the "first official" comic. It became extremely difficult to get hold Mizuno's manga these days. You can buy the used book from 1,493 yen (original is 567yen), but most people said pacing was extremely fast (skipped important events) and story didn't make any sense, so it' not worth a pay. (reference from "dark history of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu")

I knew Gaku Tsugano because he drew "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo vol.1+2" before. His manga was a renewal of a movie/novel which was extremely popular in 80's Japan. He gave modern interpretation to the original story and changed plots here and there. Arrangement was quite successful and many people enjoyed his work (including Masami Yuuki of "Mobile Police Patlabor").

He did same thing to this "Haruhi" manga too. He changed/rearranged a plot of Haruhi here and there. For example, a girl with a knife incident happened before Mikuru joined SOS. Some people liked his rearrangement and some didn't. In my opinion, it wasn't too bad.. just anime-version is too superb. Drawing itself is Gaku Tsugano style. It's a bit (sometimes quite) different from original Noizi Itou. He is not a bad artist, in fact, he is talented. But he's not the type who spends many hours drawing refine lines. So some readers might not like his drawing style, in my opinion.

"Tsukihime (manga version)" by Akira
(2006-06-03)

Hardcore fan of Type-Moon didn't like what they saw in anime version of Tsukihime. Series was only 12 episodes long and story was quite different from the original game (I remind you, I haven't seen the anime yet). It's extremely difficult to make a story from a game with multi-endings. This is why most anime based on games ("To Heart2", for example ; _ ;) have such a difficult time... Well maybe except "AIR" (not the movie) from what I heard. Again I haven't seen the anime yet and I haven't played the game either. It'll be interesting to see how "Fate Stay/Night (1/3 Saber Episode)" and "Utawarerumono" will do, since they are single-ending games.

On the other hand, most of fan of "Tsukihime" praises Sasaki Shounen's manga version of "Tsukihime". Author knows and loves the original game and he is mixing complicated stories quite well. And he knows what readers want (like a lot of screen time of Satsuki Yumiduka, for example). Anyway, I enjoyed the battle scene against Nero Chaos. You can only imagine the battle from the game texts, but it was fan seeing the actual visualization. It was quite refreshing. It'll be interesting to see how the story will progress with a fight between Akiha and Ciel. I'm waiting for vol.4 to come out...
