"Laika 31" by Akira
(2006-05-26)

5/26 - It'll be little late, but Friday's comic strip will be up within 24 hours, I think.

5/27 - I finished rough sketch and dialogs. I'll ink them when I have time... "Why does it go there" is a joke from a previous strip (before retake) ^_^; I'll erase his phrase in a completed version.

Maybe many people noticed, but for couple of comic strips, I was testing how many panels per page is right for me. Today, I conclude the magical number is eight. With 12 panels, story goes too fast and it's hard to read. Also since each panel is so small, I can draw enough detail to the drawings. On the other hand, I can draw large drawings with 5 panels, but story goes way too slow. Readers will get bored with current three strips per week pace.

Genshiken

I think most people know "Genshiken" since it became an anime series more than a year ago. Original "Genshiken" manga ended this month in "Afternoon" (image on right. It came with additional book with mangas which won Afternoon new manga competition). It was a great series and ended without any surprises (like main characters die or something ^_^;). Otaku life goes on forever... (Small review at Yamakamu)

Anime within anime "Kujibiki Unbalance" will be airing in Japan from this automn. Also its manga version (story by Shimoku Kio and drawn by someone else) will be starting too. I wonder how anime and manga will be like ^_^; Although, most people were expecting sequel of "Genshiken" story which focuses on Chika Ogiue and Kanji Sasahara...

If I think about it, "Afternoon" is filled with manga I enjoy reading:

  • Genshiken - manga about otaku drawn in a light way.
  • Ookiku Furikabutte - one of the best baseball manga exist.
  • Historie - drawn by manga artist who created "Kiseiju". Story is getting better and better. Although author frequelty publishes unfinished pages. I hope he's ok.
  • Vinland Saga - drawn by the artist who created "PLANETES". It's about "viking".
  • Nazono Kanojyo X - drawn by same manga artist who created "Yumetsukai".
  • Mushishi - it became an animation, so I hope most people know this title.
  • Love Yan - manga about otaku drawn in a sick way.
  • GUNSMITH CATS - Bean Bandit from "Riding Bean" appears in this series. Interesting.
  • Blade of the Immortal - Is Manji still chained in a prison? I hope not...
  • Ah Megami-sama - one of otaku fantasies.

"Strawberry Shake Sweet" by Akira
(2006-05-27)

Today, I want to introduce Shizuru Hayashiya's "Strawberry Shake Sweet" which is published at a comic magazine "Yuri Hime". As you can guess from a title with "strawberry" (like "Strawberry Panic") and a magazine with a word "yuri", manga characters are (almost) all lesbians -_-; I'm not that fond of yuri manga, but this "love comedy" manga is funny as hell which normal guys like me can enjoy. For example, I had a good laugh with a band name "ZLAY".

Manga takes place at entertainment industry (idol/talent production in Japan). Story begins with Julia Tachibana (girl on the left) falls in love with a new commer, Ran Asakawa (girl on the right), at first sight. The only problem is Ran is pure, innocent, and straight girl. Ran respects Julia as "senpai" and she doesn't notice Julia's feeling at all. Julia, on the other hand, has pride in her job and acts as a good "senpai" in front of Ran (but inside Julia is totally moefied by Ran's every act/movement).

I didn't know this author drew a manga version of "Onegai Teacher". Also I was surprised that she did drawings for old PC game "CAL" and "CAL2"... She also draws "Hayate X Blade" which is getting quite popular at Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh
