"Rants" by Akira
(2002-02-05)

It is unfair... In "City Hunter", you never see Kaori hits women with her hammer or Naru from "Love Hina" punches other girls. They only hit Ryo and Keitarou... Hmm... I wonder why?

Some people asked how I draw my comic. Here it is:

#1 Idea

First I think of the idea... This is the most difficult part. It can take a few second or can take more than a month... I usually write down a list of short description of ideas like this:
  • Onii-chan and Laika talk about Lisa -> Beaten to death again
Currently I have a list of 25 or so ideas.... Usually the list increases as story continues (it's been like this for months). Guest scripts help me a lot to understand characters. It's a good indicator of character popularity. If your favorite comic wasn't updated, usually it's because author was stacked in this process.

#2 Outline

Next, I draw a very rough outline of comics in my sketch book. This is very important, since it can really make a joke effective or not. If panels are arranged badly, even the best joke can be bad. This usually takes about ten minutes.

#3 Pencil Sketch

I draw a pencile sketch on 8.5 x 11 copy paper. It's very important to make a pencile sketch detailed as possible (it makes inking easier). It is better to leave the work over night (if time allows) to see which part of drawings look bad. This usually takes about two hours.

#4 Inking

Inking is next. This is the process which requires a lot of concentration. I use a dipping pen. It is very difficult to use, but can really really make beautiful lines (if you become good at it). I'm still in the process of improving this skill... This usually takes less than one hour.

#5 Digital Tone

I use free digital tones from Nekomatagi Club. These really help make my comic look professional. I use "Define Pattern" and "Fill" -> "Pattern" of Photoshop. They are really handy to use. Then I add dialogs for finish. Tones and dialogs take about one hour. One comic usually take about four hours in total, if everything goes well.
