"Be Free!" by Akira
(2006-12-25)

I'm just whining through a comic strip. I'll continue with Laika's story arc, after this Professor and Tsunami short comic arc.

I forgot to add glasses to Professor in the last comic strip... That's why Professor looked little strange...

Please write your comment to this strip at pOnju forum

"Happy Holidays" by Konstantin
(2006-12-26)

Merry Christmas! Happy holidays, everyone! Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday break, I know I am. Nothing like a week of lazing around with the apartment to myself and a stack of games and anime to keep me entertained.

Just finished playing through Tsukihime and on a whim marathoned the anime again to see how it compares. Surprizingly enough I still found myself liking it, in spite of the blatant hack and slash job they did on the game's characters and plot. It helps that the animation is pretty and the components are intriguing enough to remain interesting even when changed and rearranged. I guess it's a case of a good anime that just happens to be a terrible adaptation of an epic game. Ciel really did get shafted, though.

"Happy New Year!" by Konstantin
(2007-01-02)

Happy New Year everyone! Best wishes for 2007, starting with quick hangover recovery.

Looking over everything I've watched over the past year, can't help but think that I've cut down on the amount of anime I've been following. Granted, my level went from Ridiculous down to merely Way Too Much, but still. Too many games, too much 4chan, and too many people with whom I watch different shows at different times and in different combinations. Ah well, all in all it was still a pretty damn good year in anime, with KyoAni giving us not one but two epic quality shows, game adaptations that made me want to buy the games, and more light novel inspired shows than you can shake a talking sword at.

Without much further ado, here are my overall impressions of 2006 in anime. As with the last year's list, these are all the shows that aired at least partially in 2006 that I've seen at lest halfway through, arranged roughly in order of preference.

A+
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
Ouran High School Host Club

A
Honey and Clover II
Kanon
Mushishi

A-
Black Lagoon
REC
Fate/Stay Night
Saiunkoku Monogatari

B+
Utawarerumono
NHK ni Youkoso!
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Mai Otome
Eureka 7

B
Zero no Tsukaima
Shakugan no Shana
Rozen Maiden ~Traumend~
Juuousei

"Going into Overdrive" by Totaku
(2007-01-04)

I'm back, not offically yet though. But I've been on a vacation for the past few weeks so as you know I've been pretty tied up, in fact, I am still busy as of right now and will not have much time to talk.

First off, I will let you know that I'll come back on the 16th, by then, I'll be fully prepared to tell you about my Christmas and New Years. Other than that, all I got here is a flash music video of a certain moon rabbit and all of her crazy friends. (yes more touhou stuff):P This one is quite catchy too and has a uses quite a few internet memes as well.XD Anyways, enjoy your "Ibana Overdrive".

That will cover it for now, till next time.

"Nightmare City" by Konstantin
(2007-01-09)

To butt in on Totaku's turf, I wanted to share some awesome flash videos I happened across today. Check out Nightmare City and its sequel, Nightmare City -Catastrophe-, both from a Japanese flash animation studio called Clairvoyance. They have some amazing action and effects work, featuring 2ch-style cats, of all things, and are about as well-animated as you can get in Flash.

There's also a 4chan parody of the first one made by NCH called 4chan City (18+, NSFW, lol 4chan), which is filled with the sacred lulz and prompted me to dig up the originals in the first place.

Another neat thing is that all three animations feature music from the J-rock band 403 (a.k.a. 403 -Forbiddena-), which is nice and crunchy, and won't get out of your head. They score additional coolness points for making their music available for free legal download and allowing others to freely use it for non-commercial purposes. Then again, any band crazy enough to do a metal medley of Kanon music wins automatically in my book.

"Season End" by Konstantin
(2007-01-16)

Apologies for the weirdness with the site over the past week. Looks like our hosting provider has been experiencing some technical difficulties, though hopefully things should have fully stabilized by now. If it happens again, try going to tsunamichannel.net, since that address worked fine through the outages.

I've been ramping up my anime watching to clear off space for the new season and managed to finish off a number of shows in the past week. Here are some of my impressions:

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage - Black Lagoon has managed to pull a Nanoha, and gave us a second season that one-ups the first in just about every single way. Better action, smoother and deeper character development, and a much darker overall tone. Also more Engrish, more Lussian, and more Balalaika, who is by far the most badass character in recent anime memory. It's a travesty that Revy made it into SaiGar and the Kapitan didn't. Not that I'm biased or anything. Final Rating: A

Kamichu! - Cute. Very cute. Any cuter, and this show would have been too cute. But it isn't, instead being the perfect quirky little slice-of-life show with assorted bits of Shinto and Japanese folklore thrown in for flavor. The animation is gorgeous, the character designs scream moe, and the characters themselves are appealing and amusing, though your mileage may vary regarding the placid pace of the show and its general lack of plot. The cat rocks. Final rating: A-

NHK ni Youkoso! - Solid show, though it slumps a bit after the midpoint and repeats itself near the end. Still, it's an interesting concept, focusing on some severely screwed up individuals on the seedier fringes of Japanese subculture. A nice show with which to cool off overzealous weeaboos, though I think it would have worked better as a 13-epper. In fact I was fully expecting it to end at 14, since ep 13 provided such a powerfully cathartic closing point. Yamazaki is the man. Final rating: B+

In completely unrelated news, if anyone wants to try their hand at voice acting, Topleka (of Casey & Friends fame) is currently setting up auditions for a radio play based on Akira's LoveSit oneshot. If you're interested, drop by the forum thread and try out some lines.

"Officially back and ready for action!" by Totaku
(2007-01-18)

Well fokes if you haven't read my topic, then I might as well sa it. I'm offically back now and as I promised, I would explain how my vacation went.

To sum it up pretty quick, I've been busy doing lots of game playing on my PS2. I've been Chasing monkeys, doing dungon exploring, rolling Katamaris, Fighting demons, proving life is viewtiful, and running through a mythical japanese land as a wolf with a piant brush. So yeah, my hands are very full with gaming and I may be content for a while.

But now school's back in session so I'm back here as well. And as it turned out y classes are no walk in the park. I will be having my work cut out as I craft out pottery in ceramics, study the history of graphic design, and constructing my cenior project. My senior project will take up a great deal of my time, so I do not know when I'll be ranting again, but I will say this.....wish me luck. Cause I will be need it so I can get through and graduate.

Till next time
Ja Matta. ^_^

"Anime and Abridged Anime" by Konstantin
(2007-01-23)

Subs are starting to trickle down for the new anime season, though so far they're still pretty few and far between. Out of what I've seen, Manabi Straight seems to be the most promising show, poised to take over from Kamichu for my dose of cute loli slice-of-life. Then again, it's a Ufotable show, and they have a history of coming out with spectacular first episodes and then failing to live up to them. Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora feels like a rehash of Kannazuki no Miko, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. Yuri drama and WTFmecha FTW? Finally, Venus Versus Virus looks like a generic cute girls vs monsters show, with nothing other than decent production values to recommend it. Boring show is boring, and eyepatches are not my thing.

In completely unrelated news, YouTube has produced a miracle. LittleKuriboh has managed to make Yugioh watchable. The trick is deflating each episode to 3-6 minutes, and redubbing everything for maximum lulz. Looks he's up to ep. 16 now, and has managed to get funnier as he went along. Check it out, IN AMERICA. Or not.
